Are you planning to add a feature that would automatically change the zoom to follow a subject moving towards and away from the camera? The subject could carry/wear some device that might be able to assist with the tracking.

We have tested zoom tracking and have found it to be problematic. A transmitter of some sort that the rider wears is a good suggestion but not for the immediate future.

Using two cameras on adjacent sides of a rectangular area might solve the zoom problem. The horizontal angle of one camera tells the other about how far the rider is. The two cameras could cooperate to set their zoom values. This is fairly easy to program but does require two cameras.
